5 - Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

Last Years Rank - 7

Metal Gear Solid, the original spy espionage game for the PS1 and the game that started the spy trend could be considered one of the finest games ever made for the Playstation, let alone ANY system. Playing as Solid Snake, you are on a covert mission to stop a group of terrorists called Fox Hound before they can launch a nuclear missile from a new mobile mech called Metal Gear. Hideo Kojima's masterpiece was a breath of fresh air for a lot of gamers with its heavy handed political overtone and whacky bosses. But the game had style. For a PS1 game, it looks amazing. The colors, tones, and overall look and feel of the game were something I've never seen before. Subdued blues and grays, with splashes of color scattered through out and a great set of models and animation is what made gamers take notice. It also was one of the first games which made use of voice actors as something serious and important instead of cheesy and boring. Everyone must experience this game at least once in their life times, preferably on the PS1, but if you can't get a hold of it, try out Twin Snakes on the GameCube for an updated version.
