"EA Sports... It's in the Game" This was the year David Hayter's (Solid Snake from MGS) voice made it clear that if it was in the game, it was in the game for EA's sports franchises and it the case of NHL 94 for the SNES, I believed it to be true. This was a tough choice to put this game so high on my list, but I honestly believe that NHL 94 is still EA's best hockey game to date. Forget all the flashy new graphics and fluff from the new games, NHL 94 brought it all together after 2 years of hits and misses. NHL Hockey had real teams, but no real players. NHLPA 93 had real players, but no real teams. Now in 94 we have both, the introduction of the one-timer, the ability to edit lines (first time for the SNES) and a new graphics and sound engine which I still feel today captures the feeling of hockey better than anything else for it's time. The sprites had more movements, were more colorful, the sound effects were DEAD ON, and even the arena music played arena specific songs (Blues had When the Saints Go Marching In, Sharks had the Jaws theme for the powerplays, etc). Why oh why can't EA get it right again??!? The only thing this game was missing was a season mode and the ability to trade and create players or else this might just be my #1 game of all time. |
